The transfer window always brings divided opinions about players linked to the club. Several fans have called for an upgrade on what is currently at the club. The question remains what constitute an upgrade on the players currently on the books of the club?
The report that Arsenal are strongly considering activating the 8 million Pounds release clause of Loic Remy’s contract has not gone down well in some quarters of the fan base. The assertion being that he is not really an upgrade on Oliver Giroud who currently benches him in the National team. Although the QPR striker possesses a strong quality that Giroud lacks, which is pace. And besides that, he can play across the attacking positions; in both wings, and at the tip of the attack. The consternation within the fan base at the likelihood of the former Marseille striker swapping West London for North London is borne of the fact that, the club might not bring in another striker who truly possess world class qualities.
Loic Remy as highlighted above, has some natural qualities that are lacking in Giroud’s game, but he is not particularly an ungrade on Giroud. Although, it should be stated that the fact Remy plays second fiddle to Giroud in les blues, does not mean he would be an underwhelming signing for Arsenal. The calls have been on the club to get in a World class striker that will compliment the world class midfield it has. Rarely has a Wenger’s team struggled in the final third of the pitch in terms of goal returns over the past two seasons. Which makes the type of striker the club need to bring in equally important. Which has caused the fury of Remy’s likely signing in some quarters.
However, if the club goes ahead and bring in Loic Remy, as has been widely speculated, and his coming is argumented by the signing of Alexis Sanchez, this could make up for the short fall of missing out on a world class striker that will lift the entire squad. In such a scenario, the first eleven would look weaken on paper as a result, but the club will have a much bigger squad in terms of players who can do a job when another gets injured.
The question in the lips of many within the fan base is that who will Arsenal sign at the end of the transfer window. Arsene Wenger has a knack for going outside the spectrum of all the speculations, by bringing in players that went under the radar in the rumour storms. The word world class has dominated the thoughts of those affiliated to the club. A signing in the mode of Loic Remy will definitely not be world class. So also, the signing of Alexi Sanchez, but many will beg to differ due to the qualities of the Chilean. But one thing that cannot be taken away from both these players is that they have pace to burn. Something the club has lacked in recent seasons.
In the end, many will take the overall squad being strength over papering over the cracks with just a world class signing.
