The Arsenal midfielder Andrei Arshavin has only been a peripheral player at the Emirates for the last couple of seasons, and was happy to be loaned out to Zenit last season so that he could retain his place as captain of the Russian international side.

But since his country crashed out of the Euros with a whimper (and he upset all the fans with his attitude afterwards) it seems he is now happy to return to the Arsenal bench to see out his £80,000-a-week contract, according to todays Standard, despite there being little or no chance of him gaining first-team action this season.

The emergence of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain last season, joined with the arrival of Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski means that the little Russian has dropped even further down the pecking order, and now that Diaby and (soon) Wilshere are also in the frame, it is no wonder that Arsenal have been desperately trying to release Arshavin on a free transfer.

But with his wife Julia pregnant again, and his wish to remain in London and secure citizenship, he is unwilling to move back to Russia to reignite his footballing career.

As Wenger hasn’t even had Arshavin on the bench for the last two matches it looks like Arsenal are now going to have a non-playing luxury hanging around on £80,000-a-week until the end of his contract……..
