Mike Phelan believes Arsenal could lure Jonny Evans to the Emirates Stadium if Arsene Wenger meets West Bromwich Albion’s asking price.
The Northern Ireland international is one of the most experienced centre-halves in the English Premier League following 10 seasons in the English top tier with Sunderland, Manchester United and West Brom.
Indeed, Evans has a winning mentality developed at Old Trafford following a return of three Premier League titles, three League Cup and the Fifa World Club Cup during his nine year spell at Manchester United.
The 30-year-old was an integral part of the Manchester United team that reached the Champions League final in 2009 before a 2-0 defeat to Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Barcelona side in Rome.
Evans has been a rock in the heart of the West Brom defence in recent seasons after Louis van Gaal sanctioned the sale of the Northern Irish defender to the Baggies in the 2015 summer transfer window.
Former Manchester United number two Phelan supports Arsenal’s pursuit of Evans.
“I think Arsenal have said that if the right player comes along they will be looking into it,” Phelan told Sky Sports News on Monday.
“Jonny Evans is available, his contract is running out and West Brom might be in that way of thinking to move him and let him go at the right price.”
Arsenal was humiliated 4-2 by Championship side Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.
The Gunners have registered 28 concession in 22 games in the Premier League this season which has seen the north London side five points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool FC in the race to secure a Champions League spot.
