The Sochaux and France midfield playmaker Marvin Martin has ended speculation about a possible move to England by signing a five year contract with Ligue 1 side Lille.
The 24-year old had been strongly linked with the Premier league and it was believed to be a straight fight between Arsenal and Tottenham. Lille, however, have to bolster their attacking midfield options after selling Eden Hazard to Chelsea. The £32 million they got for the young Belgian left them able to compete with any club for Martin.
Arsenal fans had been a little apprehensive about Wenger’s signing of Martin. He has made a name for himself at Sochaux, appearing in 129 league games since his debut in 2008. He is renowned as a good distributor of the ball and was nicknamed “little Xavi.” His slight stature was a worry, with people doubting his ability to adapt to the rigours of English football.
Also, despite having won 14 caps for France, he has not appeared at Euro 2012 and Arsenal should maybe wonder why. Besides, we are not short of players with flair and passing ability. With the deal for Giroud sewn up and M’Vila almost definitely coming to the Emirates, Wenger can bide his time.
