The 2017-18 season has been a tumultuous one for Arsenal. Despite a strong run in the Europa League, Arsene Wenger’s side have struggled with consistency in the Premier League. Couple that with an early ouster in the FA Cup and an embarrassing 3-0 shellacking in the Carabao Cup Final and you’ve got the makings of a disappointing campaign.
Despite it all, Arsenal still have an excellent chance at securing an appearance in next year’s Champions League after missing out this season. If Wenger’s side is able to get past CSKA Moscow in the quarterfinals of the Europa League, they would be among the odds-on favorites to win the tournament outright. As of now, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are both listed at 4/1 to win Europa League glory. The season has also seen a few of the Gunners’ mainstays depart. Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud were sold to rivals Manchester United and Chelsea during the winter transfer window. Mesut Ozil looked likely to leave, as well, before renewing his deal to stay at the Emirates. However, might a few more of the club’s most loyal servants be on their way out soon?
If media reports are to be believed, United’s Jose Mourinho is interested in luring a couple more of Wenger’s key cogs to Old Trafford. Earlier this week, The Evening Standard reported that the Red Devils are lining up a move to bring in talented defender Hector Bellerin. A day later, the Daily Star said that Mourinho also has his eye on midfielder Aaron Ramsey.
Sanchez has been slow to adapt to life in Manchester, while it’s fair to say that Paul Pogba hasn’t been worth the cash, either. Bringing in a stable midfield force like Ramsey would at least give Mourinho a more established, stable presence in the middle of the pitch.
The Wales international’s deal with Arsenal is set to run through next season, and Mourinho believes that the player’s box-to-box style would be perfectly suited to help his struggling side. Chelsea are another team that reportedly has Ramsey on its radar.
Ramsey, 27, has been at the Emirates since coming over from Cardiff City as a teenager in 2008. The player reportedly passed on the opportunity to join Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford back then in favor of a move to North London. In 229 appearances with the Gunners, Ramsey has contributed 35 goals.
As for Bellerin, United are reportedly set to offer £50 million to secure the Spaniard’s rights this summer. Bellerin just turned 23 this past week, so it’s easy to see why he would command such a hefty fee. Other giants like Juventus, Manchester City and Barcelona are also reportedly interested in the youngster.
Antonio Valencia is currently Mourinho’s first-choice right back. While he is still giving United solid play, he will also turn 33 this coming August. A potential move to United might prove awkward for Bellerin, who criticized the demeanor and leadership of Alexis Sanchez after the Chilean moved to Manchester a couple of months ago. Bellerin made the move to Arsenal in 2013 after spending his youth career in the Barcelona system.
Arsenal would obviously hate to lose a young player of Bellerin’s quality, but they could also invest the tremendous financial windfall his sale would provide to upgrade other weaknesses in the squad. The Gunners’ defence is in need of an all-around rebuild.
Following the international break, the Gunners will next be in action on April 1 to take on relegation candidates Stoke in Premier League play.
