Arsenal have reportedly joined the race to sign West Bromich Albion defender Jonny Evans.
According to James Ducker of the Daily Telegraph, the Gunners are keen on improving their defense after a disastrous start to the Premier League season.
It’s noted they would face heavy competition from Manchester City for the Northern Ireland international. Pep Guardiola’s side will submit a third offer worth up to £30 million for the West Brom man, according to the article, while Leicester City have also had a £21 million bid rejected.
“Arsenal had a bid for Evans rebuffed by West Brom last year, but Arsene Wenger wants to sign a centre-half after his side’s calamitous start to the season and could look to muscle in on City’s efforts to sign the player,” Ducker wrote.
According to James Whaling of the Daiy Mirror, the Gunners are close to completing a move to Inter Milan for Shkodran Mustafi, meaning the Gunners squad will be short on defenders. Gabriel Paulista has also moved out of the Emirates Stadium to Valencia.
As noted by Mark Ogden of ESPN, Arsenal’s defense has been nothing to write home about so far this season
Evans would potentially make this area of the team impenetrable, with the Gunners lacking dependable and combative players in the role.
James McNicholas suggested he would be a smart acquisition for Arsenal:
Too often in recent years, the Gunners team has wilted under defensive pressure, with players at the back lacking the discipline and concentration to get through tough spells. Evans has shown throughout his Premier League career he does not fall into that bracket.
