Arsenal fell-back Nacho Monreal has reportedly caught the attention of Basque club Athletic Bilbao and a possible move could be on the horizon. The Spanish outfit has been in pursuit of the Spain international for some seasons now.
The 31-year-old transferred to Arsenal from Malaga in the winter of 2013 and has since become the favorite to the detriment of injury-prone Kieran Gibbs.
Monreal’s contract at the Emirates is still valid for two more years, but this has not put a stop to the circling speculation over his with long-time admirers Athletic Bilbao still anticipating a move for him, according to MARCA.
Bilbao has a limiting transfer policy that only allows for players on the Basque nationality.
The report further stated that Monreal could be convinced to exit the Emirates this summer, should Arsene Wenger not pen a new deal at the north London club.
Wenger’s current contract is not due for another month and it is still uncertain if he will be offered another deal following the recent FA Cup win.
Monreal has proved to be loyal to the Gunners despite all the attention being showered on him and the reason being the close rapport between the ageing manager.
With Sead Kolasinic coming to the club on a free transfer this summer, Monreal would likely be playing in a different role in the Gunners backline.
The Spaniard, whose wage is £65,000 per week, has made 174 appearances across all competition for Arsenal to date.
