It seemed like a done deal that the Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen would be on his way to White Hart Lane this summer, but the two clubs are apparently miles apart in their valuation of the talented 25-year-old.
It is being reported that Tottenham are offering just €10million for Vertonghen, who has only one year left on his contract with the Dutch giants, but Ajax won’t budge from their price of €15million.
Vertonghen is now worried that the two clubs could leave him on limbo by haggling about the price all summer. “Tottenham are absolutely my favourite,” the defender told De Telegraaf. “Tottenham is a fantastic football club that has the tradition I want. They buy young, eager, offensive-minded players.
“But the Ajax board are asking for a very big amount for a player whose contract is running out in a year. I trust that both Tottenham and Ajax will put some water in the wine and they will soon reach an agreement.
”I hope that this awareness is there, because a transfer lingering for weeks like Maarten Stekelenburg’s to Roma seems very harsh.
“He joined at the end of Roma’s preparation for the new season. I want to be able to blend in with the other players at Spurs from the start of pre-season training.”
So it sounds like he is still desperate to move to the Dark Side but he could come back on the market if someone matches their asking price. Is Vertonghen worth €15million? And should Wenger still go for him?
I like him hes a good player but hes to attackive i already think koshielany and vermaleen are too attack minded. In addition to that him being so eager to play for i rivals we definatly should look elsewhere like Rami from valencia we need slme hieght and stregnth but a bit of speed hes not as slow as metersker. He reminds a bit of kompany hes 6ft3 french(lol) and very composed he would fit perfectly.

I honestly don’t think we need another CB. Full backs are my worry. With Sagna being injured the last while and Gibbs & Santos being very attacking minded (which is good), but they need to balance defending also.

Vertonghen is obviously a good defender. But he appears too passionate about Spurs for my liking. I wish he makes the same passionate comments about Arsenal that he makes about Spurs. But no. He sounds crazy about Spurs.
Personally, I think we should pursue him no longer. We just have to bring in people who are passionate about and understand Arsenal, its history, its philosophy and all. Only then can we expect the best out of such players, even if they were just average players, because then, they would be willing to die on the pitch for the team. This is better than a high profile player who delivers half-hearted performances because his priorities lie elsewhere.
Vertonghen may do well to stay at Ajax rather than move to Spuds. Honestly, what can he see in a small club like Spuds who only have a small club mentality ?
Don’t stress to much about the De Telegraaf quote. It has been strangely translated and I think should read “Tottenham would be my preference ” and I believe the quote was in relation to a choice between a couple of teams that didn’t include Arsenal. Who would have thought a journo would then take the quote, modify it and use it out of context…… and then trot it out for every story about Vertonghen.
15million….no way!!! If he was that good he wouldn’t be signing for tottenham lol. forget him, we need Hummels! now he’s worth 15million imo.
if a player chooses spurs over arsenal he aint worth a carrot let alone 15m euros.

Cant just understand, i blve Wenger scotted him first then why backup for spurs. We need to fortify ds team for God sake. To b sincere we only ve Koscienly and Vamalaen as our CB, Arsenal need to spend sm big money on qlty players as to challenge for d title. A player whose heart lies elsewhere can never give his all. I disagree, he shuld go 2 spurs. Wenger shuld go 4 players dat are willin & passionate abt our club lik podolski.
He was very passionate about Arsenal, he wanted to come, he also wanted a guarantee of being first choice CB and not just bench seating, we couldn’t give him that because of Kos, Vam, & Mer. So he choose the worst best thing.
I was an advocate for Vertonghen comng to Arsenal but he has made too many overtures about his love for Spurs so I doubt he would be welcome.
i have seen verthoghen…he is not in any way better than our first choice three defenders and is at most as good as djourou was for us last year…so i think djourou is best for fourth choice…i feel we need a attacking mid fielder…no need of defender or maybe a backup for both right and left back just for squad depth sake and a striker (third choice that is at most 10 to 15 goals a season and does not mind warming bench for most of the season and can be good experienced substitute when other dont work out so should be of age above 28)
