Marouane Chamakh joined Arsenal in 2010 from French league winners Bordeaux. Before joining the club he was named in the team of the year in France for the 2009-2010 season, so everybody thought that he will be the striker everybody was hoping would be good enough to challenge Van Persie for a starting spot.
After a very good start at the club, Chamakh got injured pretty quickly, and by the time he got back his form was completely gone and the goals simply stopped coming for the 27 year-old striker.
He completed his first season at the club with 44 appearances and only 11 goals, most of them scored before he got injured.
After a long drought and after he became a substitute for Wenger’s team, Chamakh finally seems to have caught a break, and managed to score superbly in the final minutes of the game against Blackburn.
Coming on as a second half substitution for The Gunners, only 9 minutes after he stepped on the field, Chamakh headed home an excellent cross from Van Persie and thus winning the Player of the Match award from Arsenal’s fans, beating Mikel Arteta with 24% of the vote.
After such a weak period, this might have been exactly what Chamakh needed to start his engines again and to begin scoring goals for the club. With Korea striker Chu Young Park now also at the club, the fight for the starting position will be hard for Chamakh who needs to prove his worth if he wants this to be the rebirth of his career.
