Arsenal desperately need a confidence-boosting win against Sunderland tomorrow, but yet again defensive injuries are set to leave the Gunners vulnerable at the back.
Per Mertesacker’s ankle injury last week was a blow, but Laurent Koscielny’s withdrawal during the game against Milan has now left a Djourou-shaped hole in the Arsenal defence. The good news is that there is no serious damage to Koscielny and he will be back next week, but that leaves a dilemma for Wenger against Sunderland.
The Arsenal fans have zero confidence in Djourou this season, but luckily Gibbs’ return to the squad allows Vermaelen to return to the centre-back position and his partner needs to be decided.
Will Wenger simply allow Djourou to start (and after giving him a new contract that would seem logical) or should the Frenchman give Miquel a chance to shine in his favoured position. The young Spaniard has proved his worth in covering at right-back previously so he has earned a start in the centre at some point. And it is an FA Cup game…
Another option is to pull Alex Song back into defence and perhaps bring Coquelin into midfield, but Wenger has no shortage of midfielders to use if he wants to change things around a bit.
If you were Wenger who would you choose as Vermaelen’s partner for Saturdays game?
