The Gunners had a fairly bad week with loses to AC Milan and Sunderland, in the Champions League and the FA Cup respectively. In the Premier League Arsenal find themselves in a position of possibly losing the fourth and final slot for next season’s Champions League, with Chelsea, Newcastle and Liverpool playing catch-up.
This is definitely a testing time for Arsenal as the fans (and players probably) are increasingly becoming restless over the lack of creativity in the midfield and venom among strikers outside of Robin Van Persie. Club manager Arsene Wenger must seriously consider making some changes in the midfield and signing a few new players to complement Van Persie and hopefully persuade him to stay.
Money has never been a problem at Arsenal, and the club has managed to sign some wonderful players in the past and shifted their home from Highbury to the Emirates, to a stadium with much bigger capacity. The real problem is that the club failed to notice the serious challenges posed by other clubs in the Premier League. Tottenham has been a real revelation and Manchester City, with its cash rich spending spree, has virtually blown Arsenal’s hopes of qualifying for the fourth spot. Liverpool under Kenny Dalglish and the up-and coming Newcastle United also pose a threat for the club’s position.
It is quite evident that Arsenal needs to be more ambitious at signing new players. Other clubs are seriously trying to overhaul their teams, with Tottenham trying to bring in Eden Hazard and Liverpool spending fortunes to try and regain their former place in the Big Four.
However, everything is not calm and quiet at Arsenal as Wenger is reportedly trying to refurbish the team by signing some top-class players this summer, with Lukas Podolski, Martin Suarez, Eden Hazard and Mario Goetze said to be on his list.
Arsenal simply can’t afford to lose any more top players to their rivals like they did with Juan Mata last summer…
