The Spanish goalkeeper Manuel Almunia has revealed at last that his contract with Arsenal is finished at the end of the season, and he will not be offered an extension by Arsene Wenger.
Almunia tried to put a nice spin on it by saying he’s looking forward to moving on. “I’m looking for a nice move next season,” he told Sky Sports News. “I want to start a new episode of my life.”
“It’s a very respectful relationship with Wenger and now I’m free, I can do what I like and he’s happy with my work at Arsenal for ideas.”
Almunia’s only first-team action came when he was on a one-month loan at West Ham, and he revealed that he was too “lazy” to look for a move away from London. Perhaps he is hoping that the Hammers will take him on full-time next season. He said: “I have got lazy to move too far, because life here in London is fantastic and I hope I can have a club to go to next season so I can stay.”
Well he has certainly had an easy time of it for the last 18 months, having very little to do and raking in 50,000 a week in wages. If Arsenal can rid of a few more non-playing deadwood we can perhaps afford to bring in a star or two this summer???
