Arsenal might lose one of their most important transfer targets of the season, as rivals Tottenham have reportedly submitted an offer for Belgian defensive star Jan Vertonghen.
The Ajax star has expressed his wish to join the Premiership on many occasions, and he is due to leave the Eredivisie in the summer although his destination is still unknown.
Wenger has been tracking him all season long, but Spurs manager Redknapp wants to beat him to the defensive star. Since the English manager lost the national team manager spot, he has started searching high and wide for reinforcements for next season’s European experience.
Vertonghen was expected to be the next signing for Arsenal this summer after they managed to sign Podolski, but it seems that the transfer is being delayed, and Wenger isn’t helping confirm or deny the rumours.
The Gunners want Vertonghen not only for his ability to play as a central defender, but also for his skills as a defensive midfielder. In the Belgian national team he’s a frequent defensive midfielder showing his extraordinary coordinating skills despite the fact he’s tall.
Wenger needs to reinforce the team if he wants to have a chance to win the Premiership trophy next season, and according to the rumours he has quite a big list of possible incomings. But is Harry just waiting in the wings to see who else that Arsenal are looking at?
