With Arsenal’s back up goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski set for a move away from Arsenal in the summer, it is not a surprise that Arsenal are been linked with a move for another shotstopper. Should the Polish star quit Arsenal in the summer, it would seriously decimate Arsenal’s goalkeeping ranks. Italian shotstopper Emiliano Viviano is set to return to Italy in the summer after his loan spell at the Emirates. That leaves us with youngster Damian Martinez as the back up to current number 1 Wojciech Szczesny.
According to Le 10 Sport, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are interested in the twenty-eight year old goalkeeper. Monaco are also interested but the principality club seems to have their eyes set on current Barca number one Victor Valdes.
A move for Mandanda would be a move in the right direction because the Frenchman is vastly experienced and would not just be a back up but one that would come and compete for a number one spot.
Szczesny has done well this season but he needs strong competition so that complacency doesn’t creep into his game. One of the reasons why Szczesny has been on top form this season has been owing to the presence of Fabianski on the bench. He knows that a gaffe from him could see his older compatriot stepping up to take his place. Wenger proved it last season that he could wield the axe and no one was a sacred cow.
Mandanda would provide more than a cover for Szczesny. He would give the competition that would keep the Pole focused and in top form. With regards to competition for his services, I believe Arsenal have the edge owing to the presence of Wenger (few Frenchmen can withstand the lure of working with Le Prof).
