Done Deal- Wenger Confirms Arsenal Third Signing Of The Summer

The search for a goalkeeper that will challenge Wojciech Szczensy seem to be drawing to a close going by Arsene Wenger’s statement in New York ahead of the pre-season friendly with New York Red Bulls on Saturday. When asked about the situation that awaits Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina, he said thus:

“You know at the start Szczensy will be the No. 1, then again we’ll be down to performances and, if Ospina shows that he is better, he will play.”

Although, the David Ospina transfer has not been confirmed by the official site, the comments of Arsene Wenger above all but, confirms the signing of the Nice of France goalkeeper. Such comments by the Frenchman will not be the first time he would be talking about a player before the confirmation of a player. Few years ago, he confirmed the signing of Sebastian Squillaci from Seville before it was officially confirmed on arsenal.com

In the case of the Colombian, the 25 year old 6ft goalkeeper has been the subject of several links to the club over the past few weeks to Arsenal, with several reports in Colombia and France hinting that a deal of £3 million has been agreed for the goalkeeper. He was one of the stars of the Colombian team at the just concluded World Cup in Brazil. So by Arsene Wenger’s comments it will not serve entirely as a surprise that he is saying what is widely known by those within the Arsenal faithful and within media circles.

David Ospina comes with a reputation as a strong shot stopper who commands his box very well despite his height which is 5in shorter than the goalkeeper he would be challenging for the first team shirt.

He kept 13 clean sheets last season in French Ligue 1 coming fourth with Monaco’s goalkeeper as the goalkeeper with the cleanest sheet last season in the French league.

As most of the players that featured at the World Cup returns to training next week, it would further become clear when the goalkeeper deal would be confirmed, but going by Arsene Wenger’s comment that David Ospina would be challenging Wojciech Szczesny for the top goalkeeer spot next season, few would doubt this statement from the horse’s mouth.

As it is, it seems the club is close to it third signing of the summer going by Le Profs statement.
