Arsenal are interested in signing Moroccan and Bayern Munich’s Mehdi Benatia who has struggled in Bavaria since his 2014 move from Roma according to the Mirror.
Though a good centre-back, the Moroccan has made only 29 appearances in his two seasons at the club. This has forced Coach Pep Guardiola to play defensive midfielder Xabi Alonso in the centre of defence at certain times while Javi Martinez who is also injury prone has paired the ever reliable Jerome Boateng when fit (Martinez).
Though he has made only 29 league appearances, the 29 year-old has helped the Bavarian club to an impressive 18 games clean sheet in his 29 games in two seasons . His impressive performance stretches back to Udinese after he helped the Italian club to another impressive eight clean sheets in 19 games in his most productive season at the club.
At Roma, Benatia played only one season before joining Bayern for €26 million . The defender again helped his Italian Club (Roma) to a staggering 19 clean sheets in his 33 league appearances in 2013/2014 season.
Benatia is seen as an expensive signing and it seems unlikely that the deal will be sealed as the Morrocan would not come cheap. This is mainly because Bayern will want to recoup most of the €26 million used to sign him from Roma. While his pedigree is not in question , it is highly unlikely Arsene Wenger would spend that much on a defender if one considers the bargain fees used to sign the likes of Gabriel and Laurent Koschieny.
Meanwhile Wenger’s plan B would be the signing of Villarreal’s Mussachio who is seen as a cheaper option and a younger defender (25).
