According to Spanish publication Marca and AS, Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has decided to recall Portuguese left-back Fabio Coentrao from his loan spell at French Ligue 1 side Monaco.
Zidane plans to use Coentrao as second choice to first team player Marcelo. Last season, Real Madrid academy graduate Nacho Fernandez, Danilo and Alvaro Arbeloa all filled in at left-back in the absence of Marcelo.
Coentrao was signed in 2011 from Benfica to compete with Marcelo but was loaned out to Monaco last season where he started in impressive form before injury ruled him out of the season. Marcelo has been exceptional and is likely to continue in the starting eleven ahead of Coentrao when he returns from loan.
This leaves Arsenal as the only team in the race to sign Swiss and Wolfsburg left-back Ricardo Rodriguez who has been exceptional in the German Bundesliga. Rodriguez was heavily linked with Real Madrid, but the recall by Real Madrid will leave Arsenal as favourites this summer.
