Arsenal are increasingly close to their second summer signing if you believe various reports from the German media. Two weeks ago, just before the start of the European Championship, highly reliable German media outlet Kicker reported that Arsenal are set to activate the release clause of Wolfsburg and Switzerland star Ricardo Rodriguez. Although nothing was since had of the reports, but Wolfsburg have now officially confirmed the player will be leaving the club this summer.
According to reports, Wolfsburg’s failure to make it into any of the two UEFA club cup competitions for next season has helped make Rodriguez’s mind up as he wants to play in the Champions League next season. Aside Arsenal, Roma and Real Madrid have been credited with an interest in the highly talented left back.
“Rici has stated that his future is not with us,” Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs told Wolfsburger Nachrichten. “But we can live with this decision.”
With Real Madrid looking like they want David Alaba, it appears Roma is Arsenal’s real challenger for the player and considering how attractive the Premier League is and the fact that Roma do not have the financial power to compete with Arsenal in terms of wages, Arsenal may just win the race for the signature of the player. Rodriguez himself has confirmed on a number of occassions that he will like to play in the Premier League.
And with his national team mate Granit Xhaka now at Arsenal, Arsenal may have enough instrument to lure him to England.
