Vermaelen Set to Complete Roma Move – Arsenal to sign Manolas
A report from Spain states, Thomas Vermaelen is surplus to requirements at Barcelona and manager Luis Enrique is keen to get rid of him.
Vermaelen, who signed a five-year deal with the Catalan club in 2014 for £15m is set to move to Serie A side AS Roma, after a poor spell at the Spanish club, putting Arsenal in pole position to signKostas Manolas.
The 30-year-old former Arsenal captain only notched up 21 appearances, with very few of them being full 90 minutes, in his final season with FC Barcelona.
Reports say Roma are willing to swoop in and sign for €10m. The only issue, apparently, is his wage demands. He earns around €4m a year.
With Roma’s reported interest in signing the experienced defender, the Daily Star reports Arsenal is in pole position to make a move for Roma defender Kostas Manolas after several months of scouting the Greece international.
Per Mertesacker is now 32, Koscienly is 30 going 31 hence there is a real chance that Arsene Wenger will sign a young centre back, and Kostas Manolas look very likely.
Football Insider is reporting that Serie A side Roma are willing to sell if their £30m valuation of the young centre-back is met. It is believed that Arsene Wenger sees Manolas as a long-term replacement for Per Mertesacker and a more reliable option in defence than Gabriel.
The Gunners are not the only English Premier League side interested in the 24-year-old defender, as both Chelsea and Manchester United are hoping to secure the services of Manolas.
Manolas made 43 appearances in all competitions last season and was a mainstay in Roma’s starting XI since his arrival to the Italian capital in 2014.
