According to reports, Gonzalo Higuain will not renew his current contract with Napoli, which only has two more years left to run.
Last season in Serie A, the Argentine netted 36-goals in 35 matches, and he has been linked with a number of top clubs already this summer, as per the Daily Express.
The Argentine’s agent and brother, Nicolas, said they are unhappy that the Azzurri are insisting any interested suitors meet the 28-year-old massive €94 million (£77.8 million) release clause. He went as far as claiming Napoli has not fulfilled the promise they made to Higuain which was that they will compete for titles. An indication that Nicolas will want to move his client away from Napoli at the slightest opportunity.
Given his proven quality in front of goal at the highest level, Higuain could undoubtedly thrive in any of Europe’s major leagues, having already impressed in the Serie A despite the defensive style of play at Serie A. He also coped well with the pressure at Real Madrid which is testament to his quality.
According to Bleacher Report’s, Manchester United are likely to make a move for him should he becomes available. However, as United will not be in the UEFA Champions League next season, the Argentine may see a move to Old Trafford as a step down. This will work perfectly in Arsenal’s favour to sign the player.
Arsenal certainly need a world class striker and Higuain is certainly one. He has nothing more to prove to anyone in the world of football. Although Wenger is certainly not going to pay £77.8 million for Messi not to talk of Higuain, but maybe a bid of £45 million? Especially as Napoli are said to be interested in signing Benteke from Liverpool which could be an indication that they believe the Argentine will leave and are already preferring themselves for any eventuality?
