Aside having to sign a centre forward this summer, Arsenal also needs to bring in a centre back. This is especially so as Per Mertesacker will be 32 in September. And according to Sky Sports, Atlético Madrid’s centre back Lucas Hernández is a transfer target for the Gunners this summer.
The 20 year old defender that has come through the youth ranks at Atletico and endured a breakout season in recent year, having featured strongly for Diego Simeone tutored side in the second half of last season, playing 13 games since February.
The youngster’s rice at the capital city club has caught the attention of Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, who is believed to be keen on bolstering his defence this summer with the ageing Per Mertesacker’s lack of pace resulting in Per’s struggling against top quality strikers recently.
It is widely believed that the Arsenal boss want a new centre back to play alongside the ever reliable Laurent Koscielny.
However, Lucas looks more like a successor to Koscielny rather than an immediate partner, due to their similar style of defending.
Lucas, despite being a centre-back, he can also be deployed at left-back, another position the Arsenal boss is believed to be interested in strengthen this summer.
