According to the Daily Express, Arsenal have opened talks with Valencia for defender Shkodran Mustafi.
The Germany world-cup winner has emerged as Arsene Wenger’s No 1 defensive target following the injury blow to his compatriot Per Mertesacker.
Mertesacker, 31, has been ruled out for at least five months after damaging his knee during the club pre-season match against Lens last week.
Report emanating from Sky Sport Germany claim the north London club have now entered into talks with the Valencia defender but are yet submit a formal bid the club’s hierarchy.
However, the defender’s agent Ali Bulut is expected to fly to Spain over the weekend to discuss about his client’s transfer fee with the La Liga giants.
Mustafi is have a £42million release clause however, the Los Che are reportedly willing to allow the German international leave for just £25m plus a further £8m in add-ons.
The 24-year-old returned to Spain for pre-season training yesterday after an extended break following his inclusion in the Germany squad for the European Championships in France.
The Emirates outfits admits last week that he needs to sign another centre-back, despite bringing in Rob Holding for £2m from Bolton.
“With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front and we are looking to bring somebody in,” Wenger said via the Daily Express.
