Arsene Wenger has made it known in recent weeks that he is searching for a centre-back after Per Mertesacker suffered a serious injury that is expected to keep him on the sidelines for up to four months.
According to reports from the Spanish news outlet, Arsenal Under-21 captain Julio Pleguezuelo has agreed to join Spanish Segunda division club RCD Mallorca on a season long loan.
The highly-skilled 19-year-old, born and breaded on the island of Mallorca before he made his move to Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy, is regard as a versatile defender who is capable of playing across the back-line as well as in a holding midfield role.
According to Diario de Mallorca, the report claims that the north London deal with the Spanish club was kept secret by the two clubs, which all secret and negotiations were made took the duo club just one afternoon to complete.
The Spanish club’s decision to strengthen their defensive options comes after an unsuccessful season last season, which saw the club just two points above the relegation zone after winning just 12 of their 42 league encounters. They ended the season 17th on the table.
Pleguezuelo reportedly had a number of offers on the table, but opted to return to his hometown in order to give a boost to Mallorca, who was only recently La Liga regulars.
The Spanish defender was originally keen on battling for a place in Wenger’s first-team; however, the French manager reportedly prefers experience in defence, leaving Pleguezuelo open to a move away from the Emirates.
