Arsenal Banter brings you latest update on Arsenal news from top media sites like Daily Mail, Metro, The Express, The Independent, The Telegraph, SkySports and so on.
Arsenal will have to take out £88 million from their purse to pay Gelson Martins’ release clause if they wish to sign him.
Arsenal have reportedly submitted an offer worth £79m to Sporting Lisbon for both Gelson Martins and William Carvalho, with £53 going for Martins release clause.
However, according to latest reports, Sporting can decide to increase that release clause to £88m whenever they want.
This seems both outrageous and mightily convenient for Sporting. Which begs the question, why a release clause of such ridiculous amount exists in the first place.
This seems to be a case of Arsenal’s name being used to make Sporting’s stance clear. The Gunners have other targets and won’t have the money to spend a further £80m on two players, nevermind £88m on just one.
