“How Torreira has been helping me during match” Granit Xhaka admits One thing

Arsenal Banter brings you latest update on Arsenal news from top media sites like Daily Mail, Metro, The Express, The Independent, The Telegraph, SkySports and so on.

Arsenal summer signing Lucas Torreira’s strength in midfield has allowed Granit Xhaka to express his creative ability this season.

That’s according to former Gunners defender Martin Keown.

Swiss international Xhaka has been used in a holding role in recent years but has often been criticised for his lack of discipline.

New manager Unai Emery evidently saw central midfield as a problem area as he splashed out on Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi during the summer.

Torreira had to bid his time before earning a place in the side after recovering from Uruguay’s World Cup campaign.

The 22-year-old has started the last three matches and Keown believes he is bringing the best out of Xhaka.

He told the Daily Mail: “What’s clear to see is that they have won three times away from home — having only done so four times on the road in the Premier League throughout the whole of last season.

“I couldn’t bear to watch Arsenal’s away matches last season.

“Now they look much more competitive.

“As much as I enjoyed the confidence and expression of Aaron Ramsey’s Harlem Globetrotter goal, what impressed me more was the grit, tenacity and determination in Arsenal’s performance.

“After letting Fulham back into the game, they showed real character to win emphatically in the second half.

“Lucas Torreira has brought balance to the midfield.

“He has freed Granit Xhaka to be more creative.

“Until this match, it felt like Unai Emery’s Arsenal were a work in progress.

“On Sunday they bossed the game.”

The North London club are currently fourth in the Premier League table, two points off top.

Following the international break they return to action as they welcome Leicester to the Emirates.
