What is Premier League?
The Football Association Premier League Limited, simply known as Premier League, is the highest division of the English football league system.
There are twenty teams in the Premier League, and each team plays 38 games during the season. Seasons run from August to May. Most matches are played on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
The tournament was established as the FA Premier League in February 1992 following the decision of teams in the Football League First Division to break away from the competition.
49 teams have competed in the Premier League since the beginning of the tournament in 1992. 47 English and just 2 Welsh teams. The PL operates on a system of promotion and relegation.
A method of promotion and relegation exists between the Premier League and the EFL Championship. The three lowest placed clubs in the Premier League are relegated to the Championship.
The top two clubs from the Championship are promoted to the Premier League, with an additional team promoted after a series of playoff games involving the third, fourth, fifth and sixth-placed teams.
The years following 2009 marked a change in the structure of the “Top 4” with Tottenham and Man City both breaking into the top four places regularly, turning the “Top Four” into the “Top Six”.
The top 4 clubs in the Premier League qualify for the subsequent campaign’s UEFA Champions League group stage. The PL Golden Boot is awarded each campaign to the top scorer in the league.
Former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United centre-forward Alan Shearer holds the record for most Premier League goals with 260.
Arsene Wenger is the longest-serving coach, having been in charge of Arsenal in the PL from 1996 to his exit at the conclusion of the 2017–18 campaign, and holds the record for most games managed in the PL with 828, all with the Gunners.
Wenger broke the record set by Sir Alex Ferguson, who had managed 810 games with Man United from the Premier League’s beginning to his retirement at the end of the 2012–13 campaign.
The Scottish coach was in charge of the Red Devils from November 1986 until his retirement at the end of the 2012–13 campaign.
